Simpson and Bowles were appointed by President Obama in 2010 to co-chair the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, a bipartisan group looking to erase the United States’ multitrillion-dollar debt. Simpson served in the United States Senate from 1978 until 1997 and later was a Visiting Lecturer and Director of the Institute of Politics at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. Bowles joined the Clinton administration to run the Small Business Administration and eventually became President Clinton’s Chief of Staff. From 2005 until 2011, he served as President of the University of North Carolina system.
