Author of the Award-Winning Book:
The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindedness
President Nathan Hatch and the Office of the Provost have invited Professor Michelle Alexander as this fall’s Voices of Our Time speaker. Alexander is a highly commended civil rights lawyer, advocate and legal scholar at Ohio State University, where she holds a joint appointment with the Moritz College of Law and the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity. Professor Alexander’s book argues that rights won by black Americans through the civil-rights movement have eroded through the “war on drugs” and the decimation of communities of color. Alexander’s lecture will explain how rights like serving on a jury and voting, as well as opportunities for employment, can be taken away from anyone with a criminal record, and how this affects black communities.
